Participants will examine the purpose and significance of historic districts, including the distinction between properties that are merely old and those recognized as historic for their cultural, architectural, or community value. The course will review historic districts in the East Lansing area, with attention to how district designation can affect buyers, sellers, and property owners through regulatory requirements, potential fines and fees, and risks associated with deferred maintenance, demolition by neglect, and unauthorized alterations.
